Dr T. Longvah

Fellow, the Centre for Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems

Dr Longvah, a retired director-grade scientist from the National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, is a renowned expert in food composition and nutrition. His research focuses on Indigenous Peoples’ food systems, food composition, micronutrient deficiencies, non-communicable diseases and biofortification.

He has made significant contributions to studying the food systems of Northeast India, exploring the region’s biodiversity for improved nutrition, sustainability and cultural preservation.

His work has integrated Indigenous knowledge into global food and nutrition strategies. Dr Longvah established the Indian Food Composition Database, resulting in the Indian Food Composition Tables, published in 2017, which has been acclaimed worldwide for its standard and data completeness.

He is also the Global Vice Coordinator of INFOODS and a member of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences Task Force on Traditional and Indigenous Food Systems and Nutrition. He received the prestigious Nevin Scrimshaw Award in 2017 from FAO/INFOODS. Currently, Dr Longvah is a Fellow at the Centre for Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems, based at Dimapur, Nagaland and continues to shape global discussions on sustainable nutrition.
